Needing care or assistance is always about someone else, not yourself. So, how do you introduce care to seniors who don't feel old or elderly yet? The answer is: gradually and accessibly. Genus Care developed a product they describe as ‘warm technology.’ It looks like a household item, but it connects the user to professional care, family, and friends, ensuring support is always close at hand. Safety and reliability are key.

The motivation

Genus Care was born when founders Jill Mulder and Hans-Elias de Bree experienced firsthand how care for the elderly was managed for their own parents. ‘The government encourages seniors to live at home as long as possible, but the care sector is struggling with time and staff shortages. The interaction between professional care and informal care isn't optimal either. We broadened our own experiences: how can we shape the future of care and include informal caregivers (family and friends) in the professional care circle?’ The result was Genus Care.

Data as the foundation for care

With Genus Care, Jill and Hans-Elias developed a completely new product. ‘Care technology has existed for a while, but existing products only cover part of the care. Think of personal alarms, fall detection, video care, or daily structure support via a talking plant. Genus Care bundles all care technology into one device. You can use it for video calls and sharing photos, but also for smart monitoring: fall detection, daily routine registration, and medication reminders. If medication isn't taken, a notification is sent immediately. This monitoring runs continuously. Every 10 seconds, a Genus device collects data, such as temperature, movement, light, sound levels, and screen touches. We are often asked: Where is your data stored? Our answer: in the Netherlands. That immediately earns us a big green checkmark.’

Jill continues: ‘We are sometimes approached by consumers who want something for a parent, but most consumers check with the government and insurers first. That’s how we ended up in the care structure. Our client base now consists of implementation partners in the Netherlands, England, Spain, and Australia. They work with care organizations that operate both intramurally and extramurally. We quickly needed a partner that could guarantee two things: data security and high-quality support. All data must remain in Europe, and data redundancy is essential. With Genus Care, we provide peace of mind and trust. We need to be able to trust the parties we work with. As a development company, we often have unique questions, and we don't want to deal with a chatbot.’
