WHAT IS INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE, REALLY?

For a long time, business models for hosting and data center services were based on owning, renting, or leasing hardware and software. Expanding computing capacity or storage required purchasing and installing additional hardware or software. This was a time-consuming, typically capital-intensive, and inflexible process. This situation has been rendered obsolete by two developments. The first is virtualization, the process where software such as VMware creates a layer between the hardware and the operating system. This layer allows for the creation of so-called virtual machines. The result is more efficient hardware utilization without compromising stability¹. Virtualization leads to lower management costs, which benefits the customer.
