For a long time, the standard for process and office automation was to deploy and manage data and applications from within one's own environment as much as possible. Servers and primary backups were kept on-site. Later, the option to use leased lines for externally hosted data and applications emerged. The high costs of these lines and limited bandwidth hindered large-scale adoption. When broadband internet became commonplace and available bandwidth increased, the option to use VPNs followed. In other words: partially shielded communication via the regular internet. This option was, and still is, widely used.
