A sunny day filled with interesting sessions, lots of news from VMware, a Cohesity party (our backup solution), and something you can't miss when in Barcelona: a Champions League match featuring FC Barcelona! Harm Jan Stam, IT Manager at Fundaments, is happy to share how his day went and bring you up to speed on the latest news.
Harm Jan: “It was another busy day with all sorts of inspiring sessions! The day started at 9:00 AM with a 90-minute keynote from VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger. VMware is going all-in on Multi-Cloud and also announced that they will be integrating vCloud Director, our IaaS platform, with hyperscalers like AWS and Azure. This means that as a customer, you can use the best of both worlds: the smart, innovative services of the hyperscalers and the traditional Virtual Machines on our IaaS platform.”
Project Pacific: decisive Kubernetes performance
There was also talk of my personal favorite: ‘Project Pacific’. This project will ensure that containers and traditional VMs run side-by-side at the virtualization level, rather than having a container inside a VM. This will provide decisive Kubernetes performance. VMware’s figures indicate it is 30% faster than traditional Linux VMs and even 8x faster than bare-metal Linux machines. Additionally, VMware announced that their software-defined networking solution, NSX, will now provide Intrusion Detection and Intrusion Prevention. You will no longer need a separate, usually physical, solution like Fortinet for this. After the keynote, I attended several sessions, with Kubernetes remaining the common thread for me. I saw a lot of Kubernetes deployments, CI pipelines, service mesh, and various best practices on how to make a monolithic application Kubernetes-ready.
I also learned how we can monitor our IaaS platforms even better with new VMware APIs and how DRS 2.0 will further improve the stability and high availability of our platforms for our customers' workloads. My day ended with a fantastic party from Cohesity, featuring none other than Rick Parfitt Jr. on stage. All in all, it was another successful day!”
Champions League with CSN Groep
Meanwhile, Raoul Werger, Managing Director at Fundaments, attended the FC Barcelona vs. Slavia Prague Champions League match with our partner, CSN Groep. Raoul: “Unfortunately, it was a somewhat dull match, ending in a 0-0 draw, but that didn't dampen the fun. It’s always an incredible experience to be at Camp Nou, and it was a great evening. Thanks, CSN Groep!”
