Kubernetes Cluster
As an Independent Software Vendor (ISV), delivering Software as a Service (SaaS) is key. To do this, it is important to develop functions and launch new functionalities in a secure, fast and scalable way. Nowadays, this can be done very easily thanks to container technology and Kubernetes services. And when you say containerisation, you say Kubernetes. Kubernetes services has established itself as the standard when it comes to managed container hosting. Fundaments has embraced this technology and offers this service in the form of a managed Kubernetes Cluster.

What is a Kubernetes Cluster?
Let's start at the beginning: container technology. Because what exactly is a container? And what are Kubernetes services? A container is, so to speak, a ‘package’ that consists of the application and all the components required for this application to run. Thanks to the unified design of these containers, they work the same wherever they are started, on any platform and any operating system. A container is therefore an ideal basis for hosting code.
A Kubernetes Cluster is a set of services that provide management of the overall container. In a Kubernetes Cluster, there are so-called master nodes, which take care of managing the cluster. In addition, there are worker nodes that take care of actually running the containers in which all application components run. The Kubernetes Cluster ensures that these containers can be run across multiple machines and environments, from virtual to physical and from Cloud-based to on premises.
Kubernetes cluster management
The management and infrastructure of the Kubernetes Cluster are fully managed by Fundaments, which we call: Container Platform as a Service. This allows the platform user to deploy all Kubernetes workloads on the allocated infrastructure, without having to worry about management and availability of that infrastructure.
HHighly available Kubernetes Cluster
All Kubernetes Clusters are deployed on Fundaments Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). This infrastructure is subject to an availability guarantee of 99.95%. Deploying the distributed architecture of Kubernetes services on this infrastructure with a minimum cluster setup of three master and worker nodes creates a highly available Kubernetes Cluster. With proper monitoring, each cluster is also provided with high availability with auto healing functionality. This functionality ensures that in case of a disruption of one of the components of the Kubernetes Cluster, a replacement node (master or worker) is deployed and thus all container components of the application are fully available again.
Besides availability, scalability is an important part of Kubernetes Clusters. The Kubernetes Clusters offered by Fundaments have different t-shirt sizes; small, medium and large. Here, we always work with a fixed set of 3 master nodes, in addition to which the worker nodes consist of a set of 3 nodes with a specific size. This allows unlimited scaling in size.
Tailoring for every application
Very often an application or service is not fully containerised and components such as databases, load balancing and persistent storage are also part of the overall service. Fundaments can support customised solutions with Kubernetes services and ensure your application is optimally configured and uses the best components. This allows you to focus on developing the application code.
Platform sovereignty
There are applications that are deployed in an environment where data storage within the EU or within Dutch borders is required or that processes and assurance thereof have specific requirements. This is exactly where Fundaments fills a need: with a broad set of certifications and a service realised entirely within the Netherlands, every requirement around the sovereignty of Cloud services is met.
100% control over your data
Want to be certain where your data resides? That's what Fundaments' Sovereign Cloud can guarantee. This gives you the assurance that your data is on Dutch soil, that it is managed by a Dutch party, which is Fundaments, and therefore there is full control over all your data. Fundaments' Private Cloud solutions are the basis for a solid and reliable IT infrastructure - at your premises or ours in the Netherlands. Our data centres are spread across seven data centre locations in the East, Central and West of the Netherlands. These are all Tier3+ locations: the highest achievable class for a Dutch data centre at the moment. A Tier3+ data centre has everything in place regarding security, including guaranteed power supply, intrusion protection, water and fire detection and climate control.
